Gwyneth Paltrow Has Made Spain Her Second Home

Posted on July 01, 2009 at 12:19 PM

Has Gwyneth Paltrow traded England for Spain as her new favorite country? I don’t know about that, but it certainly sounds like she loves Spain. She says it’s her "second home."

It is so different from the United States. It seemed to have a
history, and the buildings are years and years and years old. Here in
the United States an old building is about 17 (years old), and over
there it’s from 500 B.C., it’s incredible," she tells the Associated
Press.

"Also, the way people live over there. They seem to enjoy life a
little bit more," she continued. "They aren’t running around as much as
in New York. They enjoy time with the family. They don’t always have
their Blackberries on."

She shot the PBS show ‘Spain… On the Road Again’ and lived with a local family whom she is still close to. She even makes sure Moses and Apple can speak Spanish.

Gwyneth said she is working on a book on "U.S. cuisine with Spanish influences that is due out next year."

I think it’s great that Gwyneth has such an appreciation for other countries and cultures.

  1. I find your comment hilarious. You are trying to call other people rude but you sound quite rude and obnoxious yourself. You need to stay right where you are because you are the kind of American people talk about bad about. You sound so full of yourself and you shouldn’t take that crap any place else. All you will do is flame the sterotype that Americans are all rude and out of touch with reality. Maybe, try growing up a bit. That might be a start. I hate when people take their stupidity, buffoonery and pompous attitudes over to other countries. Especially, the countries that all well-known for having very nice and respectful locals. BTW, I am an American and have been to plenty places. Maybe, you are the one that needs to travel a little bit more. I am also 5’6 and 115 LBS, which would make me far from fat. So, try speaking for and about yourself, instead of an entire country that have millions of people.

  2. If “pompass” was meant as a play on words, congrats. But if not, it’s spelled “pompous”

  3. no she doesn’t eat real food.

“While on a panel at Seattle’s Paramount theater on Saturday, Bourdain was quick to make fun of Batali’s PBS series, Spain… On the Road Again, featuring Gwyneth Paltrow.

“Why would you go to Spain with the one bitch who refuses to eat ham?” said Bourdain.

Paltrow has stated that she adheres to a strict macrobiotic diet and will not eat any meat during the series.”

    she’s an arrogant twat.

  4. Americans also can’t seem to stay away from blogs and leave snotty anonymous comments – oh, wait.

  5. She only needs to look beyond her front door to realize that our country has been here for more than 17 years and there are structures a few hundred years old in the US as well. Doesn’t she realize that the White House is over 17 years old? She is an entitled, ignorant, idiot.

  6. Why doesn’t she try to learn the history of her own country instead of putting it down. And, yes the United States does have a history and a culture. It is very different and unique because there is a hugely different population in this country. We have people from everywhere here. I am so tired of listening to someone put down the very country that enabled her to do all the things that she does. Her parents and she became wealthy in this country. She tires me…I really don’t want to ever look at or read anything about her again.

  7. If I could afford it financially, I would probably do what she is doing. The cultural exposure is such a treat for her kids.

  8. ” I think it’s great that Gwyneth has such an appreciation for other countries and cultures. ”

Wow! You had to dig really deep for that compliment. Take a bow, take a bow. I couldn’t do it!

She may not be trying to sound incredibly bitchy, but she is. I have never liked her attitude. I think that she is very affected by the amount of money she has and can’t relate to “normal” people.

Will William Joel be joining her?

  9. Gwyneth Paltrow is the epitome of pseudo-intellectualism. She truly believes because of her time spent abroad that she is an authority on how the world works. She has no clue. She is completely detached from reality, and couldn’t begin to know what it’s like to live life as an average American.

Most people who don’t make 10 million dollars per film “always have their blackberries on” not because we have an innate desire to be culturally closed off from the world or not spend time with family, but because it’s what we have to do to make sure there is food on the table and a roof over our family’s heads. Something she knows nothing about.

But, for all of her criticism, she sure doesn’t mind the blackberry totin’ plebeians buying tickets to her movies. But what do you expect…at this point, she has “who gives a crap” money and doesn’t care who she disparages. I chock it up to pomposity and ignorance and will move on. I never watched her films anyway.

  10. What is wrong with comparing the two countries? It’s not like she said anything that’s untrue (except that building that is 17 years old of course, but I’m sure she was exaggerating.)

  11. i’m not sure but maybe the 17 years old – comment was just an exaggeration. Many here defend the US’s history by saying : many buildings are few hundred years old. I mean, for a building, that’s young. Many European countries have loads of houses that are 1000-3000 years old. Those aren’t the basic appartment houses of course, but anyhow. US is a very young country as such, as it was “discovered” so late by Kolumbus (vikings, chinese etc. had also been there, but i think Kolumbus is the one most think as the founder) So only then, year 1492, started the era of this western culture, before that it belonged to the natives and was, as all know, very different. But i 100 % agree, it’s wonderful to be able to see countries that have this historic feeling to them, but US has many million other things to offer. And it’s own history is very interesting, just not one that would be all that linked to the Roman empireum etc. So it’s completely idiotic of Palthrow to praise Spain so that it sounds as if she’s mocking the American history. A truly witty person can bring up everyone’s weeknesses in a funny yet fair way, she’s just dump.

  12. Hmm. That sounds snobbish. She didn’t have to compare the two countries. She only had to declare her love for Spain and that would have been enough.

  13. I think she should move to one of these other countries she’s always touting and STAY THERE. Please don’t resurface!!! Just shut up and go away.

  14. I’m pretty sure I’ve seen her eat meat on the show, and even make references about it. She is arrogant, though, I won’t argue with that.

  15. Well, having watched the tv show “Spain…On the Road Again” made me somewhat respect Gwyneth Paltrow. She actually eats food AND took the time to learn to speak Spanish beautifully. I studied Spanish for 6 years and can barely speak it and sound like an American trying to speak Spanish. I think these quotes may have been taken out of context. If anyone is interested in seeing Spain and learning about the food (which is one of the BEST parts of visiting Spain), you should definitely check out Spain…On the Road Again…very interesting show.

  16. I understand what she is saying but she always sounds so pompass when she talks. I cant stand it. The poster above who made the gracious comment – you are SO right !! Well said.

  17. That is a funny statement considering that a good many of the homes in the East coast are over 150 years old. Its an easy argument to say any European country has so much history than the US. I do believe that Americans should go abroad and experience the world outside of the US, but this actress needs to find a way to stop sounding so condescending.

  18. Paltrow lived in Spain as a young teen, she studied and attended school there. Her parents made sure Gwyneth and her brother were very well cultured in other languages. She is snobbish though, I believe she grew up very privileged and detached from the realities of life. Like having to struggle to pay your bills or put food on the table, she is a very lucky ho indeed.

  19. I can’t stand Gwyneth Paltrow. Americans are stressed out because they’re working all the time trying to make money. Compare America’s productivity to Europe (especially Spain), they can’t touch us.

  20. She is right. Maybe if you people got out more you would realize how much AMERICA SUCKS and how disgustingly fat, rude and oblivious Americans truly are. Americans cant go anywhere without their blackberry on, without texting constantly and without talking about stupid reality t.v. bullshit. Every other country laughs at us so don’t say Gwen is snotty she is just being real. America is a joke that everyone laughs at but for some reason Americans think their shit doesnt stink. I can’t wait to leave this country its such an unhealthy place for you physically, mentally and emotionally. This country is ass backwards.

  21. The only thing that is pathetic and ridiculous is you for generalizing the way you do. We can’t wait for you to leave too. The sooner, the better. Happy trails, idiot.

  22. Not just that, but there are buildings in New York that are older than 17 years.

Lately, she’s been sounding so ignorant, if not downright pompous, whenever she opens her mouth. Did anyone else catch her blog post where she referred to Billy Joel as “William”?

  23. New York is not the entire country. There are plenty of places that are not as stressed out as New York and while America may not have as many ancient buildings, we certainly do have places and things that are well worth seeing. I’ve had the good fortune to be able to visit a few countries, but I made sure that I saw and appreciated my own first.

  24. I used to be indifferent to her, but her latest remarks are really starting to make me dislike her.

Hey, let’s start placing bets on how long it will take her to start speaking her English words with a Spanish accent, similar to the way Madonna adopted a British accent when she moved to England.

  25. Sounds like she doesn’t like the US very much. I really hope she stays away. I don’t like her very much.

  26. you guys took the words right out of my mouth and said it beautifully. Is she not savvy or intelligent enough to appreciate other countries and cultures without making a negative comparison to the US?

  27. How very cool it would be to have a second home, espeically in Spain! Gwyneth can you adopt me?—em’s

  28. and me too, please! i wanted to go to spain since i was about 10 years old. Still trying to get there, no luck so far.
Looking forward to the cookbook, i like her recipes

  29. I have friends who’ve gone to live overseas for extended periods of time and they’ve all told me pretty much the exact same thing! Maybe one day I’ll get to go see for myself, lol. I do think she’s right. We (Americans) always seem to be in a big hurry and are way too stressed out. LOL

  30. Once I saw Gwyneth in an interview and she was talking spanish and she do it very well. I mean, sometimes Will Smith try to do it but Gwyneth really knows how to speak. you can not notice that the english is his first lenguage.

  31. i’m so tired of snotty fishsticks. she’s a spoiled stuck up beeyotch. and her daughter is ugly. AND IF YOU DON’T LIKE NYC, GWYNNIE, MOVE THE F&CK AWAY

  32. Oh, come on. Her daughter is adorable. I agree with you though about Gwyneth, she does seem to be very arrogant.

  33. She sounds so stupid sometimes, an old building only being 17 years old? yea okay… the oldest building in the united might just be Taos Pueblo Built between 1000 and 1450 AD

  34. i agree with her sounding stupid. she acts like it’s our (americans) fault that we don’t have tons of really old buildings.

  35. If she were truly a gracious person, she’d be able to compliment Spain without putting down the US. I agree with the poster above, NYC isn’t all of the US. There are some wonderfully laid back places here. Also, this land has history – it might not be in the architecture but in the terrain and natural formations. Not everyone cares about buildings :)

  36. You are so right! This comment shows she has no grace, in my opinion. I have dual US and French citizenships and can pay compliments to each of my countries without insulting the other. Paltrow seems to suffer from the very misinformed dillusion that New York and LA constitute the whole of the US. It is like saying Paris constitutes the whole of France. These cities and the people who live in them do not represent entire country populations!
