Why Buying Commodities Makes Sense in This Economy

Posted on July 25, 2009 at 10:21 PM

Forget your bonds, your CDs and your blue-chip safe harbors.

They won’t cut it in the dangerous era ahead. They will stumble and fall in the last days of the Industrial Age.

The tables on Wall Street have turned. But investors are still playing the old game. They’re still pinning their hopes on the next Microsofts and the next Googles, hoping beyond hope for the next generation of super-stocks to bail them out. Meanwhile, even in this depressed market, with the prices of many physical commodities themselves higher, commodity stocks are still cheap. Some are trading with single digit P/Es. (I’ll tell you about some of them in a moment).

But the market is still pricing commodity stocks as if they’re not in a long-term bull market. What they don’t know is that they’re in for a nasty surprise. Look no farther than the current, astonishing rebound in the price of crude oil!

But, make no mistake, the long-term outcome of the game has already been decided! As you’ll soon see the new game on Wall Street will be vastly different from any that most investors today will be familiar with. It will be more like the’70s, where oil shocks, commodity crunches, and spiraling inflation almost ruptured the very fabric of American society.

Commodities are the structural backbone of the Industrial Age. And when commodities go up, most other investments go down. While rising commodity prices might be great for their producers (and those invested in them), it’s terrible for the economy, and the broader market.

Higher commodity prices are a killer on a broad spectrum of corporate profits. Take oil for instance. Virtually everything you own or consume today has been touched by oil in some fashion-whether it was used in the transport of the goods, or the fertilizer on your foods, or the plastics in your products. Everything from deodorants to dresses…shoes to shower curtains… toothbrushes to trash bags has been touched by oil.

When oil prices remain low, it doesn’t just keep the price of our gas and our heating down, it also keeps the price of almost everything else down too. That’s the inflationary or deflationary power that this black gold holds.

Now, when the price of oil and many other commodities start to ratchet up again, they will spill over into every part of the economy. Industries and businesses dependent on them for their profits will wheeze. The costs of goods and services will rise.

Soaring commodity costs, led by oil, will be the fire that will fuel a new era of hyper-inflation. And inflation is the deadliest force in the economic universe. Nothing can destroy your investments like inflation. Not recessions. Not depressions. Not stock market crashes. Nor wars or environmental disasters.

It will be like the ’70′s – only on this time, on Steroids!

We had five disastrous bear markets. Oil and commodity prices began their great rise. Inflation started to spin out of control. Investors became irrational. They punished even the era’s greatest growth stocks. The P/E ratio of the S&P crashed from 16 to less than 8. Retail stores, cosmetics, beverages, food stocks all plummeted, with cosmetics leading the way, losing over 45%. Pepsi, Avon, Gillette, Kellogg’s, Hershey, Wal-Mart, Ford, GM, Dow Chemical, DuPont, all watched their stock prices crash 10-90%. Little was spared.

But commodities (and those invested intelligently in them) soared to the stratosphere. Gold went up 23-fold. Oil went up 11-fold. Sugar went up 47-fold. Oil stocks, gold stocks, copper, palladium, zinc, and silver were not far behind.

Mariah Carey And Nick Cannon Out In Tribeca

Posted on July 25, 2009 at 11:43 AM

My brain still can’t accept this relationship, however I am so very happy for Mariah Carey. It’s nice that she finally found someone she can trust and love. Here she is with her husband Nick Cannon out in Tribeca on a date.

Always smiling, hugging and looking genuinely happy together – this couple has certainly quieted the naysayers.

Dominic Monaghan and Evangeline Lilly Are Engaged Once Again

Posted on July 25, 2009 at 10:34 AM

Looks like ‘Lost’ stars Dominic Monaghan and Evangeline Lilly are (unofficially) engaged once again. According to online reports, the pair have decided it’s time to take their relationship to the next level.

Two years ago, Dominic and Evangeline called off their engagement for unknown reasons but have since reconciled.

"Dominic and Evangeline have decided that now is the time to make it official.
"They’ve been through break-ups and make-ups and feel that their love has stood the test of time. But it was very important for Dominic to let his parents know what their intentions were.

"They never stopped loving each other (after their split). They decided to take a break, but it was really hard on them both."

Glad to hear these two are back together. Waiting on rep confirmation.

Heather Mills Is Bitter (UPDATE)

Posted on July 25, 2009 at 8:31 AM

UPDATE: Heather has responded to this story – not true she says.

"Having lost my best friend to breast cancer, I cannot believe anybody would believe the moronic so-called journalists who say this! Can I reiterate for the gullible that believe lies in the press, I have never said I hope anybody dies of cancer ever."

——–

Heather Mills believes that talking negatively about her has brought cancer and death to reporters. The former glamour model – ex-wife of Beatles legend Paul McCartney -
believes in karma and is convinced people who have given her a hard time in
the past will get a life-threatening disease.
She said in an interview with Britain’s Food Monthly magazine:

"The truth
always outs in the end… no one gets away with those things. Certain
journalists have written horrible things, and then they’ve got cancer, or
they’ve had a tumor, or they’ve died. And it’s terrible for them, but
they’ve done really evil things. I truly believe things come back around."

The mother-of-one also hit out at claims she copied the late Princess Diana
in campaigning against the use of landmines in war and insists she was
fighting the cause long before Diana received worldwide attention.
She said:

"Princess Diana helped for eight months, and because she was such
a shining light and went to one minefield, suddenly everyone was into
landmines, but then only because she died did we get the extra 100 people to
sign.
"Which was terrible, but that was one of her huge legacies in life, plus
many other things.

But then everyone used to say, ‘Oh, Heather’s copying
Diana!’ And everyone in the landmine industry just laughed, because they
said, ‘Well, Heather’s been doing this for six years…’ "

Wow.
