First Look: The Karate Kid Trailer

Posted on December 22, 2009 at 8:28 PM

Here’s the first look at the remake of ‘The Karate Kid’ movie. It stars Jackie Chan, Jaden Smith, and Taraji P. Henson. The remake will have a bit of a different spin to it:

Work pressures cause a single mother moves to China with her young son; in his new home, the boy embraces karate, taught to him by a master of the self-defense form.

Are you happy about this remake? I’ll admit that it seems different to cast someone as young as Jaden (11), when the original had a very teenage-looking Ralph Macchio for the teen girls to swoon over (even though he was 23 at the time). lol But I’ve heard great things about how disciplined and hard Jaden worked on this film! In fact, Jackie Chan shared very high praises of him:

“He put my son to shame! I provided my son with the best martial artists in the world, and he could not be persuaded to try it. In just two months, Jaden had learned so much. He is truly a talented boy.
“Training in martial arts is hard work. It takes years to perfect even one punch or kick. Jaden’s father is a famous celebrity, and Jaden probably knows he could get away without having to work very hard.

What did you think of the trailer? I love the little bit of homage that they paid to Mr. Miyagi with the fly/chopstick clip. ;)

  1. This is effing terrible, a travesty. Has the well of stories really run dry that they need to remake classic films? What next a Saturday Night Fever remake? Oh, wait…NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

  2. Um… I liked the original and all, but this doesn’t look as terrible as you all think.

I hate it when they redo movies for no reason, but watch the preview without the nostalgia glasses and it’s not so bad.

  3. haha jaden is so cute and very talented.
ive seen the old karate kid movies and was in love with the boy when i was like 5! but honestly, this isnt as bad as i thought it would look. definitely not up to the same caliber as the old one but not a bad movie to take one’s kids too.

  4. First WALL STREET–NOW KARATE KID??? It is obvious that Hollywood is hurting for real talent and concepts but this SUCKS! Get ready for the remakes of Fast Times at Ridgemont High and The Breakfast
    Club!! WTF

  5. I absolutely loved the original KC and respect the views of others, but I’m a huge Jackie Chan fan and I adore Jaden Smith, I’ll give this movie a shot. It’s something I’ll take my nieces to see over the Holiday.

Also, I’m sick of people bashing America. I don’t recall people bashing other countries on this site, yet people from other countries feel the need to slam us over and over again…and this is an AMERICAN gossip site! If you don’t like us or our values, please feel free to keep to your own country. You will not be missed.

  6. I havn’t noticed people slam your’s over and over on this site. Actually this is the first time I’ve read any slander towards the US…. (not that I’ve been on this site for very long, so maybe you mean historically???)

  7. I do prefer the original movies, but in all honesty, this isn’t to bad for a remake. I do agree with some of you, Jaden is to young for this role. The role should have been cast as an older boy maybe 15 or 16. 11 isn’t really all that believable. I probably won’t be watching this movie anytime soon.

  8. omg GAG. not a remake when he’s teaching kung fu and not karate. for those of you who may not know, kung fu is chinese and karate comes from japan. i think i read somewhere that even jackie had some sense to want to rename the movie to the ‘kung fu kid’ or something like that. i am asian and this movie makes me sick. america makes me sick when they take things from other cultures and make it into a novelty. do not bash me for that statement. is it not true? for the most part anyways, i know not everyone thinks the same way.

and i don’t like that smith kid. he cannot act, granted he’s only been in 3 movies or less, and he always comes off as some arrogant brat. i want to smack him. (haha sorry that’s my i-can’t-stand-brats side coming out)

  9. “america makes me sick when they take things from other cultures and make it into a novelty” GET THE F OUT OF HERE THEN!!–Asians use OUR inventions and technology for prosperity and greed–yet we are the charity bank of the world–makes me sick. Karate Kid made me interested in Asian culture and people at a young age–so fk the novelty BS–Karate Kid was a novelty with a positive vibe and appreciation of your culture.

  10. Wow this actually looks good! I loved the first Karate Kid film so I’m definitely going to see this one!

  11. “Asians use OUR inventions and technology for prosperity and greed”. You’re effing kidding right? We are so far behind some Asian cultures in technology and innovation, it’s embarrassing. Wake up, Genius. And just because this person is posting on a US website, doesn’t mean they live here, bigot.

  12. This really pisses me off! They completely ruined the fly/chopstick part. It just shows that Chan is no Miyagi. I’m not going to watch this piece of …

I loved the first 3 Karate Kid movies and even the one with Hilary Swank was pretty good. But this is just… BLASPHEMY! The concept should’ve died 4 years ago when Pat Morita (Mr. Miyagi) passed away. By the way, I’m glad you posted a few pics of him and Daniel San as well :)

  13. I agree – this is one set of movies that did NOT need a remake! They were perfect. And classic.

But in the same breath, watching Jackie Chan do his thing is pretty awe-inspiring. It’s a pity he had to diss his own son in the statement he made about Jaden Smith though.

  14. It’ll never be the same without Mr Miagi… although I loves Jackie Chan… Just wish they would be more original and not do just another remake…. sigh

  15. But… but… that’s KUNG FU he’s doing… that’s only going to get people more confused!!!

  16. I wouldn’t pay to see this movie. The kid is too young and it seems a bit odd. I’m sure they all worked hard but I’ll stick to the original : )
