Jennifer Garner To Play Spinster Detective Miss Marple
Posted on March 29, 2011 at 3:00 PM
I kid you NOT! Disney is bringing the Agatha Christie character Miss Marple to the big screen. Miss Marple is an iconic British spinster sleuth. Hollywood (of course) has decided to make her younger with Jennifer Garner in the lead role.
Something tells me Jennifer is always going to be best known as Sidney Bristow from ‘Alias’ although she’s done mostly romcoms and comedies on the big screen: what do you think of her stepping into this role?

As brit Ive come to have to accept Americanisation (and ruuination) of a LOT of my country’s television and movies from the Italian Job (blasphemy) to U571 (just a little heads up, americans had nothing NOTHING to do with gaining the enigma machines and that movie was horrifically incorrect, inaccurate and assumed american glory in everything) but really? Miss Marple? I adore Jennifer Garner, this is no disespect to her as an actress and what she could bring the role, but to make her a thirty something?? Why bother calling it Miss Marple? Why couldnt they just write something ORIGINAL for the love of god and have her be a detective in that? This is just ridiculous. there hasnt been an original thought in hollywood for decades and recently its just been remake after remake after reboot. what?do they think noone in america will kno who she is, so it doesnt matter that the essence of miss marple, her age, is ripped away? why couldnt this still be made by disney, having JG as a suspect ro whatever and have one of the many distinguised older actresses-hell she doesnt have to be english if it helps-and do it right? Im sure even in hollywood theres an actress who will admit to not being in her thirties that could give this role what it needs.
I completely agree with you. Being Human is a wonderful BBC show and I cannot watch the American remake – it’s awful (and I’m an American!)
I disagree with Helen Mirren, however. Helen Mirren is a sexy babe and Miss Marple is a frail, elderly, sharp-eyed and keen-minded old lady. Helen Mirren – I think not!
Thanks for the support but um, i never mentioned Helen Mirrin, in fact I resisted mentioneing her as shes far too sexy and even then doesnt have the look needed. I always thought Estelle Getty from her Golden Girls years would make a great Miss Marple. I was raised in the States so my love for American tv and movies is huge but this is just…its not a remake or a reboot its a complete reworking/reimaging. Completely changing a character, the titular character makes that character someone ELSE, it makes it a whole new thing and why is hollywood so so frightened of that?. If I took Nancy Drew, made her ninety, afro carribean, foul mouthed moticycle rider and oh I dont know, male, would he still be nancy drew? NO
Margaret Rutherford, the 60ies, the wonderful oldfashioned language in those 4 Miss Marple movies she did, it can’t get better.
Classic.
Too bad Disney couldn’t find a writer somewhere in this country to come up with an original story. It’s pathetic to pretend this will have anything to do with Christie’s Miss Marple.
You know if Mr Marple was a elderly male detective, Hollywood would not want to change that, but deign to put an older woman in the starring line and its almost blasphemy. There are any number of woman that could do this role well, what is Hollywoods obsessions with “youth”…
Also I think the biggest and worst ever Hollywood remake, which i absolutely refuse to watch on principle, as the original was just PERFECT, was Death at a Funeral.
WHY HOLLWOOD??? WHY??
I SO agree with the first and second comment!
