Adam Levine Addresses Gay Rumors; Slams ‘American Idol’

Posted on August 15, 2011 at 4:45 PM

Adam Levine, Maroon 5 frontman and celebrity mentor on the hit show ‘The Voice’, opened up for the September issue of Out magazine on the rumors of his sexual orientation and to explain what he hates most about ‘American Idol’.

Adam says he’s definitely straight:

“I’m extremely comfortable in my sexuality, so I can think, ‘Oh, that’s a good-looking dude’.  Acknowledging that someone’s attractive and wanting to f–k a dude are two different things.”

On knowing his brother was gay from a very young age:

“I can single-handedly dispel any ideas that sexuality is acquired. Trust me, you’re born with it. My brother is gay, and we knew when he was two. We all knew.”

Adam shares that his family was extremely supportive of his brother:

“We all really wanted to provide some cushion for him and constantly let him know that it’s OK.  A lot of people don’t want their kid to be gay and will fight it at all costs. But I’ve got news for you — it’s a losing f–king battle. The more you fight it, the more f–ked-up your kid’s gonna be. You’ve just got to embrace it from the beginning. That’s the only way to deal with it as a family.”

The thing that irritates him most about ‘American Idol’:

“What’s always pissed me off about American Idol is wanting to mask that, for that to go unspoken. C’mon. You can’t be publicly gay? At this point? On a singing competition? Give me a break.  You can’t hide basic components of these people’s lives. The fact that The Voice didn’t have any qualms about being completely open about it is a great thing.”

  1. I’m so impressed by these quotes. He is so right about the “The more you fight it, the more f–ked-up your kid’s gonna be.”, and everything else. What a healthy outlook to have!

Liked the show, alot better than American Idol (although the post-simon season is SO much better than it used to be).

    :)

  2. I am filled with respect for Adam Levine right now. What positive, open minded words to say. If only everybody could look at life and others who are “different” to them that way, the world would be a more peaceful place.
