Actor Tobey Maguire has agreed to pay $80,000 of the $311,000 he allegedly won from convicted Ponzi schemer Brad Ruderman.
It’s all part of a lawsuit filed by the people who were bilked out of millions of dollars. Tobey and others who were winners in Ruderman’s underground no-limit Texas Hold ‘em games were asked to pay back their winnings as they were believed to have been paid out with the fraudulent funds.
A trustee for Ruderman’s debtors says he disagrees with Maguire that $80,000 is the actual amount at issue, but that the settlement makes sense when factoring in the cost and complexity of going forward in court.
‘The Great Gatsby‘ star maintains that he had no knowledge of the funds being connected to the Ponzi scheme. Ruderman is currently serving 10 years in prison after pleading guilty to wire fraud and investment fraud.
