Katherine Heigl Admits It Was Hard To Bond With Her Daughter Naleigh

Katherine Heigl’s talked about this before somewhat, but she was very open in an interview with a German newspaper: she and Naleigh simply did not form an immediate mother-daughter bond after Naleigh was adopted.

“People are always talking about the strong bond between mother and daughter, this magical connection – but we didn’t have that.  I fought incredibly hard for my daughter to accept me as mother. Her rejection almost broke my heart.”

Katherine said she initially responded by working more, but once she realized that only led to even more distance from Naleigh, she cut back on work. She says that’s why she abruptly left ‘Grey’s Anatomy.’ (I’m not sure I believe that, since she’d behaved as if she wanted off the show before Naleigh was even adopted, but whatever ;) ).

“At first I blamed myself and thought I was a bad mother. It took a while before I could admit to myself that the lack of trust had nothing to do with me.”

I’m sure Katherine’s not the only adopted mother (or biological mother who just didn’t feel that “maternal bond” instantly) who’s felt this way, so it’s great of her to speak out about it and be so honest about it!

  1. Definitely why she left Grey’s – of course she wanted to do movies but that thought strengthened once she adopted Naleigh. Movies allow her to take time off whereas Grey’s was all year around. She took about a 9 months off to spend time with her daughter after quitting Grey’s – didnt film any movies so she backed up her statement. She never once said she wanted to leave the show and all the “insider” talk I completely discount. If the press dont put a name to a quote they basically are just making stuff up and speculating.
