Okay, I must be living under a rock. I had NO idea Langston Hughes’ classic story, ‘Black Nativity,’ was being made into a movie! Well, yesterday was the first day of production, so maybe I’m being a bit hard on myself. Angela Bassett and Forrest Whitaker both star- along with Jennifer Hudson- in this big screen adaptation of Hughes’ re-telling of the Biblical story of Nativity with African Americans. With these three Oscar winners leading the cast, the movie has some serious pedigree. Here’s a description of the movie:
“['Black Nativity' follows Latimore] a street-wise teen from Baltimore raised by a single mother, as he journeys to New York City to spend the Christmas holiday with his estranged relatives Reverend Cornell and Aretha Cobbs (Whitaker and Bassett). Unwilling to live by the imposing Reverend Cobbs’ rules, a frustrated Langston is determined to return home to his mother, Naima (Hudson). Langston embarks on a surprising and inspirational journey and along with new friends, and a little divine intervention, he discovers the true meaning of faith, healing, and family.”
Can Not WAIT to see the trailers for this! According to IMDb, ‘Black Nativity’ isn’t scheduled for release until 2014. Maybe they’ll be able to get it into theaters by December 2013. They have 11 months!
