Hair Straighteners Help!!!
POSTED BY battleflag, May 28, 2008 AT 05:19 pmHi Everyone!!
I am coming over to New York in November and want to bring my British GHD straighteners with me. On my last trip over to Texas even with a transformer plug they did not work. Does anyone have any idea of how I can get them to work?
I have had a look on other websites but it all just seems like they are writing jibberish that makes no sense to me!
Any help would be really appreciated!
Many thanks

Sorry, I don't have clue how to get them to work here, Does your straightener have a customer service number you can call? Maybe they can help.
I have been looking for an answer for you, but all I seem to find is "use an adapter." What is the model #?
oh my gosh i know exactly how you feel, i moved to the US from fiji and none of my plug in beauty items work. i ended up replacing them all. If you are really attached to the straightener though you're going to need to new adapter/transformer and it's going to have to be one of the big ones that sap a lot of electricity. Try this site: http://www.world-import.com/plugs.htm or http://www.voltageconverters.com/plug_adapters.html hope this helps! Mel
Im not too sure what model it is but after doing some research I found a product at maplin electronics which is a UK based company. I might have to dig a little more but when I find out Ill post it. Failing that, I might just have to get a cheap pair when I go over! Thanks guys :D
Yes, so the electricity in the US is 110 V vs the standard rest-of-the-world 220V. It seems that the Ah-mericans always have to do things differently (date, not using the metric system, size of paper, etc. etc.) So what you had was an adaptor, not a converter. It just makes it so that your appliance can take electricity from the mains because it has a different-shaped head. This would work for you anywhere else in the world but in the states (and maybe Canada and Mexico). You would need a converter, as missem says. Step-up converters convert from 110 V to 220 V. You need one of these. Step-down converters go the other way. The only thing is that they are expensive and while not big, are HEAVY. If you don't mind the cost (the weight might be moot if you have someone to carry your luggage for you as the US allows each bag to be I think up to 42 kg), then you would have to get a converter. Otherwise, just go to Target and get a new cheapo straightener for your stay. And if you get attached to said cheapo straightener, DO NOT go back home and plug it into the mains without a converter. See, your appliances simply did not work when you tried to plug them in in the US. I brought my JBL creature speakers back home to Singapore before I figured out this voltage business and let's say that something very bad happened...
Thank you! Thats really helpful. What I have decided to do it just get a cheap pair off ebay.com before I go and that way if I come back over I can just bring them with me. Can you recommend a good model of straighteners to buy or are they all much of the same? Many thanks Liz
