The 2008 Beijing Olympics

The 2008 Beijing Olympics

Who's been watching? I went onto YouTube to see what people thought about the Olympics (and to try to find a video to post - no luck). I always like to see when people put up their reactions to things and it was very moving. People literally from all over the world made videos talking about how spectacular the opening was. It's the one moment of the year when the entire planet is united... even if it's just watching the same show. I love that.

In not so positive news, People Magazine is reporting that two Americans were attacked and one died by a crazed man with a knife.

As the world was still catching its breath from Friday's spectacular Olympic ceremony opening, news surfaced from Beijing that on the first day of the competition Saturday, a knife-wielding Chinese man stabbed two relatives of a coach for the U.S. Olympic men's volleyball team at one of the city's tourist sites. One was killed and the other injured, according to team officials and state media. The assailant then killed himself by jumping from the second story of the site, a 13th century Drum Tower, the Associated Press reports.

I have ADD, but I watched the whole thing. There were a lot of mis steps (99% NBC's fault), but it was stunning. 15 THOUSAND performers, none of them repeated a section. I'm still blown away by it. http://www.boston.com/bigpicture/2008/08/2008_olympics_opening_ceremony.html Has some stunning pictures if anyone is interested.

It wasn't two Americans that were killed. It was one killed and one wounded and then the killer killed himself. They did a spectacular job on the opening ceremony. To bad it will be over shadowed by this non sense.

I am completely against the olympics. Thankfully I don't have a tv, so I don't need to watch this crap.

i refuse to watch this year's olympics. it's a darn shame that the IOC allowed the games to be held in china!!! but then again ... they are as corrupt as the next best chinese party member...

I am on Olympics junkie! I cannot get enough swimming (Michael Phelps to be exact) and I love watching the gymnastics, track and field, beach volleyball, and diving. If there is something on I will usually have it on in the background. And I'm constantly on the computer looking up results. It's out of control but I think deep down I wish I had the athletic ability in some sport to have been able to go to the Olympics. Hopefully they will be held in the US soon because I'd for sure be there (Chicago in 2016 would be AMAZING since I'm about an hour from there). I didn't watch all of the opening ceremony. I taped it and would fast forward the parts I didn't care to see. It was amazing though! A little on the long side but very neat.

While having the Olympics in Chicago would be awesome, I want it to go to Brazil. South America has never had one held there. Out of 6 viable continents, how is one skipped over?

I, as a child used to love watching the Olympics.......but I choose not to watch these ones in Beijing mainly because of the human rights abuse by the Chinese government. I'm also against the 2010 Olympics which will be held very close to me in Vancouver. Vancouver has a HUGE problem with homeless, drug addicted and mentally ill people that live on the street. I believe the money should have been spent on people and not on the Olympic games. jmho I"m pretty sure there will be a lot of protests in Vancouver.

why would u bring politics into the olympics? the chinese people put in great time and effort for this once in a lifetime opportunity, of COURSE they want to impress the world! every country has their own problems, and to say you won't be watching the olympics because of which country it is being held... are u not planning on watching the olympics ever again? everything you listed happens in ALL parts of the world. as a child you accepted the olympics for what it was. why can't u do the same now? athletes and performers trained so hard just for this occasion... pls don't forget that.

I was blown away with the opening ceremonies. I was so impressed with the attention to details and how everything was so precise. It was amazing, and the stadium is incredible. The only thing is that I wish people would stop bringing politics into it, and just enjoy it for what it is. I understand why people would be upset, but its not fair to the athletes who have worked their whole lives to finally make it to the olympics, and people dont watch. Oh well, I still thought it was awesome.

re: greeeneyedwhwoman fyi the olympics are set up for the athletes, and the sports, not ur political bickering, it looks like u have a problem with just about every place the olympics are going to be held, go do some yoga and learn that this is about the game NOT about ur ideals

I wish all the athletes the best...and I am going for Team USA all the way... but I refuse to watch... I feel like we should not be allowed to participate while we are engaged in war... And I also feel that Bejing (China) should have never been awarded the honors of hosting the games... I guess not tuning in is my form of protest.
