That's too bad you drove all that way only to discover you had to buy tickets. When my kids were small I didn't like to venture to far from home either. I remember the week of potty training my middle daughter my husband wanted us to take the kids to the zoo. Not only was the zoo 45 minutes away, I didn't want my kids to sit on those nasty zoo toilet seats, even with paper down. Anyway it all worked out and we had fun. I guess at least you found another place to get the pumpkins. Since my kids have all grown, I just get mine at the grocery store. I still get myself one to carve. Last year I did a haunted house. Still not sure what I will do this year. I don't carve it till the night before Halloween so it doesn't rot.

I've never carved a pumpkin and my daughter asked for it this year. So I think we are going to try to do it. I don't even know where to start! It was fun - but the traffic was not! :)

I'm always the type that just needs to be in my pajamas to realize what a good day I had.

I would get a pumpkin carving kit with easy patterns in it if you wanted to do something besides the standard jack-o-lantern face. They usually come with good directions.

Hopefully, the leaves were pretty, and it was a good peeping ride. We are going to drive up to the big lake tomorrow, winnipesaukee (what about bob, on golden pond, et al) to ride around and picnic and look at leaves, get a pumpkin, and (morbid note) sprinkle my dog's ashes. I have kept them for 7 years, in the basement, I am not a freak, and it is time. I used to keep a boat up there, and she loved it. What am I going to do, keep the ashes for ever? Now your day doesn't seem so bad, does it? ;) Thanks for Kath and Kim prize, btw, I never win anything, you made my day. I had a migraine all day yesterday, and that was my inbox greeting when I finally logged in today!

aw about your dog - that's very sweet re: the ashes.

The leaves aren't really changing yet believe it or not...

We were actually going pumpkin picking today too! but it was crazy full and it was after being out all day so we decided we would go another day. My daughter is in the whole potty training process too and I'm actually thinking of purchasing one of those travel potties because well I like shopping way too much and we're going to NYC for the holidays so we'll see if that makes it easier..

Actually friends also have this pad that they keep in the car in case of emergencies. I don't know much about it - but when they are on the road and stuck, they whip those out.

I cheated during long trips - threw a pull up on her and called it a day. But even after months of being trained  - her body can only hold it for so long. So big trips make me nervous because I don't want her to fail because of our timing.

Haha re: the 9 p.m. thing and your maybe not wanting to go....get this - a coworker of mine was having a going away party and she told us where to meet and that it started at 10:30. My response was "10:30 at night?!!!". Everyone laughed at me. I couldn't believe it was starting so late.

Aw, well I'm glad you managed to have at least some fun and that you got some pumpkins! Carving pumpkins is so fun for kids (the inside is slimy, and what kid doesn't like slimy?) - have fun with that! :) A good way to do it (since you say you've never done it before!) is to cut a hole in the top around the stem, then scrape the inside out with a big spoon - try to get all the stuff out - then draw your design on the outside of the pumpkin with a Sharpie and then use a knife to cut out the design! It's great fun in a once-a-year kind of way. ;) :) I'm missing out on Halloween this year because I'm overseas, and I'm actually kind of wishing I could be carving pumpkins! Crazy.

I used to carve pumpkins with my mom and brother and sister every year as a child, and I remember it so well. We would carve like, 10, and they'd all be out on our porch all lit up on Halloween. We had like these tracing papers with pumpkin designs on them to follow, and our pumpkins always turned out so amazing!! I remember doing things like owls and cats and witches too, not just regular old faces on the pumpkin. Speaking of fall stuff -- **HAPPY THANKSGIVING** to all the Canadians here!

I envy anyone who can carve a nice pumpkin. Mine always look pretty mangled. I'm all about the pumpkin seeds anyway. Yum.
